Research

I created a bus transit app for Norfolk to address low ridership caused by confusing routes. The app simplifies navigation, provides real-time updates, and enhances accessibility, making public transit more reliable and appealing. Research included interviews with riders and non-riders, as well as insights from the 2016 Regional Origin and Destination Study.

Mood Board

The mood board for the bus app features a light and airy color palette, with shades of blue, white, and gray, inspired by Norfolk's city transit. The design emphasizes openness, minimalism, and clean, simple structures.

Inspiration

Inspiration was drawn from the rounded edges used in other transit apps, which were incorporated into the design. These features played a key role in shaping and refining the app.

App User flow

The goal is to provide users with a straightforward and intuitive way to navigate the app. Focusing on streamlining the process of searching for a destination and purchasing a ticket ensures a seamless and confusion-free experience.

Home Screen

Users can select their location, destination, date, and time, generating a list of available buses. Each option includes details such as ride duration, starting stop, seat availability, and cost, ensuring users have all the information they need at a glance.

Payment

Users can purchase up to two tickets at a time, with the total price adjusting accordingly. A payment pop-up will appear, offering the option to use Face ID or manually enter card information to complete the purchase. Once confirmed, the purchased tickets will be available for viewing on the My Tickets tab.

My Tickets

The My Tickets tab conveniently saves and organizes all your current, previous, and upcoming tickets in one place. It provides detailed travel information, including the number of tickets purchased, estimated travel times, and route details. This tab also features a real-time bus tracker.

Live Bus Tracking Feature

This button also features a real-time bus tracker, allowing users to see exactly how far away their bus is for a stress-free travel experience.

Notifications

The Notifications tab keeps users informed with real-time updates, including route changes, road closures, and service alerts. By providing timely and relevant information, it helps ease rider worry and stress, ensuring they stay up to date and can plan their trips with confidence.

Profile

The Profile page allows users to personalize their experience, including access to membership options. A membership system was designed to offer rewards and exclusive travel choices, enhancing convenience and encouraging user engagement and loyalty.

Takeaways

This semester-long bus app project taught me to appreciate the value of simplicity and efficiency in design. It also highlighted the importance of time management for future projects. I often found myself postponing tasks, thinking I could handle them later, which added unnecessary pressure. If I had focused more on setting and achieving weekly goals from the start, the process could have been much smoother. This experience has shown me how crucial it is to stay consistent and proactive when tackling large projects.
